Local Risk Of COVID-19 Remains “Moderate” For 3rd Week

Local risk of COVID-19 Spread remains moderate according to the county health department.

At today’s mayoral COVID-19 news briefing, Mayor Gailor Baird said that means the county’s COVID-19 risk dial will remain in the “mid-yellow” for the third week in a row.

“We’re deeply grateful to all of you who have done so much to help us achieve this progress that we’ve made as a community to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Baird.

Baird said even though case numbers remain steady, now is not the time to be complacent.

There are 11 new cases of COVID-19 in the area, bringing the total cases at 1,570. There are 21 people hospitalized with the virus.

As case numbers remain stable, young people are making up a bigger share of COVID-19 cases according to the Lancaster County Health Director Pat Lopez.

Lopez reported that, through June, a majority of cases have appeared in people under 40.

“Our investigators are hearing that many individuals reported that they went to bars, attended social gatherings, went camping with large groups or had taken part in team sports with no masks or face coverings,” said Lopez.

She also expressed some concern over data showing testing leveled off in June, despite capacity being high.

“More people becoming active in the community and fewer people getting tested in recent days could mean that some potential clusters are not being identified, putting more people at risk,” said Lopez

She strongly encouraged getting tested if you begin showing symptoms of the virus.

Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, and fever.
