The Nebraska Republican Party’s pressure on Creighton University to disinvite former Nebraska Democrat Senator and governor Bob Kerry seems hypocritical to University of Nebraska Lincoln Professor.
Professor John Hibbing tells KLIN News that the Nebraska GOP has been pushing –quite rightly –for freedom of speech and objecting that college campuses were sometimes limiting the rights of conservative speakers. Hibbing says it then seems disingenuous for the party to want to restrict the rights of another speaker.
State Republican Party Executive Director Ryan Hamilton cited Kerrey’s support for Roe v. Wade in urging Crighton to rescind its invitation to Kerrey as a commencement speaker.
Kerrey has since told Creighton he has decided against speaking because he doesn’t want to become a distraction if Republicans protested at the event. Kerrey says it should be a moment of celebration and not politics.
